Title : ECONOMIC PRODUCTION, HEALTH BENEFIT, GENETIC VARIABILITY, HERITABILITY AND GENETIC ADVANCE STUDY IN CHAENOMELES GENOTYPES
Abstract : The fruits of Chaenomeles or Japanese quince contain a number of biologically active substances that have proven medicinal and nutritional properties and are used in medicine, pharmacy and cooking. Due to their phenol concentration and cytotoxic effect, Japanese quince fruit extracts are raw material that promising, in cancer treatment and prevention. Japanese quince fruits contain ascorbic acid, which functions as a biological antioxidant and may help prevent chronic illnesses. The present research study aims to evaluate the unique germplasm collection of 20 chaenomeles genotypes by basic morphological and productivity characteristics, to determinе their genetic parameters and identify of promising forms for selection purposes. The results show significant variability with respect to all studied traits, such as height and diameter of the shrub, height and diameter of the fruit, length of the vegetation period, number of blossoms (blossom bud), fruit weight (by shrub), fresh seed weight, seed weight (by fruit), fruit weight, fruit yield (ha). The genotype factor has a significant impact on the variation of most of the traits. The environmental factor has a major role to play in variation of the length of the vegetation period, fruit weight and seed weight (by fruit). A high rate of heritability combined with high genetic advance was found for traits, such as height/shrub (89.43%, 819.48), and fruit weight/shrub (89.40%, 50.80), which reveals the opportunity to make a rapid selection progress in improving these traits. The studied Chaenomeles accessions are genetically distant from each other to varying degrees and are divided into two main clusters. Genetically distant and highly productive genotypes, such as G3, G2, G27 and G29 can be used for genetic improvement of the culture and further in the selection.
