SUSTAINABLE FOREST ECOSYSTEM ASSESSMENT: PLANT DIVERSITY, BIOMASS, AND CARBON SEQUESTRATION POTENTIAL |
| Abstract : |
Understanding the dynamics of forest ecosystems is essential for achieving sustainability and climate-resilient development. This study aimed to assess plant diversity, biomass, and carbon sequestration potential within the dry evergreen and dry dipterocarp forests of Tat Ton National Park, northeastern Thailand. Field inventories were conducted across a 320-ha area encompassing 22 sampling plots, where 4,047 trees were measured with an average density of 12.65 trees ha⁻¹. Structural parameters and vegetation composition were analyzed to evaluate forest heterogeneity and carbon distribution. Results revealed rich species diversity and a wide variation in carbon storage, with total carbon stock estimated at 25,383.90 tC and an overall mean of 79.95 tC ha⁻¹, ranging from 59.72 to 110.24 tC ha⁻¹ among plots. The coexistence of dry evergreen and dipterocarp ecosystems enhances ecological stability and strengthens the park’s role as a substantial carbon sink. These findings underscore the ecological importance of conserving mixed forest landscapes through sustainable forest management. The study provides scientific evidence supporting climate adaptation, carbon-credit development, and Thailand’s long-term pathway toward a Net Zero future. |
