| Title : | INVESTIGATION OF BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF EDIBLE FILMS DEVELOPED WITH Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis ETHANOL EXTRACT AND LACTIC ACID BACTERIA LYSATE AND POTENTIAL USE IN FOOD AND AQUACULTURE |
| Abstract : | Edible films (EF) have gained significant attention as a sustainable alternative to synthetic packaging, offering potential benefits in food preservation, environmental impact reduction, and increased recyclability. The aim of the study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of EF containing Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis (fingered citron) ethanol (CE) extract and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) lysate. In this context, the inhibitory effect of CE extract on some food-borne and fish-borne microbial strains was evaluated by disc diffusion and microdilution assay. Additionally, the biological activities of EF prepared using natural components (CE extract and LAB lysate) were determined by well diffusion test. Disc diffusion assay results indicated that the highest inhibition zone diameter was recorded as 10.63 mm against Escherichia coli O157:H7, while the lowest value was determined as 7.91 mm against Yersinia ruckeri. The lowest value for minimum inhibitory (MIC) and bactericidal concentration (MBC) was determined against Streptococcus agalactiae Pas. Ins. 55118 (5 mg/ml), and the highest value was determined on Vibrio anguillarum M1 (40 mg/ml). In addition, the antimicrobial activity tests of the developed EF formulation stated that the highest inhibition zone diameter was measured as 11.37 mm against E. coli O157:H7, while the lowest value was determined as 4.49 mm against V. anguillarum M1. As a result, it was revealed that EF developed with CE extract and LAB lysate with good antimicrobial activity may have potential use as natural preservatives in the food and aquaculture industries. |
